what kind of tapes are you looking for? we will make use of any donated tape, however, tapes on loan for screening consideration should feature recorded content in its original form, and including specific notable attributes (such as historical relevance, funny content edits, noteworthy commercials, landmark news events, made-for-TV cuts, found footage, other contextual distinctions such as regional accents, styles, trends, etc.).
what DON'T you accept? we will make use any donated tape, but if you are loaning a tape for screening consideration, it should NOT be store-bought or home movie-style in origin (rare exceptions may be made). if you want to pitch something before you mail it, just contact us first and we can talk it through together.
will my tape get returned? yes, all entries will be returned. only donated items are retained without return.
what if we are hesitant to loan a tape to a stranger? if you are concerned about irreplaceable content, we recommend sending us a dub.
we don't have access to equipment to make a duplicate copy. what then? we come equipped with VCR's and blank tapes at every show. bring your tape when you attend, and we can easily make a dub then.
if we come to a show and bring a tape, will you show it that night? no, sorry. all submissions are evaluated for content before being worked into a show. if your tape is selected, we'll let you know with advance notice so that you can choose whether to attend (and promote) the show.
if we submit a tape, are we guaranteed inclusion in a show? well, we make no guarantees, but (whether a small excerpt or a full cut) we strive to utilize content from every submission entered. if you want to pitch something before you mail it, just contact us first and we can talk it through together. if your tape is selected, we'll let you know with advance notice so that you can choose whether to attend (and promote) the show.
do you accept donated tape collections or old VCR's? yes, we'll make use of any donated tape, and all working VCR's.
do you accept PAL or Beta submissions? happily, yes, but all of our shows are currently projected from NTSC VHS. if you have a PAL or Beta entry you would like to submit, let's discuss the available options for procuring a transfer or deck before anyone goes to too much trouble. if you're simply donating PAL or Beta content for our permanent collection, feel free to send straight away.
what do you mean by "donating"? can donated tapes qualify as a tax deduction? donated content/equipment should be items you have no concern about retaining ownership of, and wish to gift to our permanent collection. we will also gladly accept any donated VHS/Beta/VCR/equipment that would otherwise be sent to landfill. please contact us to coordinate local pick-up arrangements if we're talking about more than just a few items. at this time, donations to playbackthetape do not qualify as eligible tax write-offs according to federal law.
